Last time we saw how the religious patriarch; Abraham was placed in a right relationship with God by his faith alone (the fancy word is “justified’). Justification is seen throughout Scripture but only in Romans chapter five, is the result seen after one places his or her faith in God like Abraham did.
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, Romans 5:1
Peace. There is a time for war, but for the most part everyone wants peace and tranquility. Peace is usually sought after since we like harmony among our groups and no threat of being attacked. We like the absence of hostility and the security and peace of mind that it brings.
To have peace; one has to recognize that there WAS or IS a chance of hostility to arise. In our nation; there is peace for the most part, but there is a huge chance that we are on the edge of that changing. Here in this chapter it is seen that since God has placed the one with faith in a right relationship with Himself; that one will continually have peace with God.
Notice the difference the peace that our nation has compared to the peace that God gives. Unfortunately, in our nation there IS a chance for hostility to arise and our security to diminish. Our peace is definitely at risk.
Here in the context of the Book of Romans; God is the one who places the sinner in a right relationship with Himself. In chapter three; we saw that we are sinners, but in chapter five it goes beyond that and it is seen that we are enemies with God until He establishes friendly relations or peace with the sinner.
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Romans 5:10
If by faith you have believed that Jesus’ death and resurrection is the one-time act that has placed you in a right relationship with God; you are now no longer an enemy of God. There WAS hostility between you and God, but because of Christ’s finished work on the cross; one can be justified by faith and that individual has confidence that God will never change His mind and become hostile towards you.
By faith, You, like Abraham, are a “friend of God” (James 2:23), because God made the first move towards you since you were helpless in saving yourself.
For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly… But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6, 8.
It is awesome to see God’s grace in how He loved us and chased after us to save us, but He doesn’t just stop there. He gives us peace.
Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. Romans 5:9
Remember in chapter one, God’s wrath is being poured out on those who are enemies of God, but by believing in Christ alone to save us; God saves us from His wrath and gives us peace so we are confident that God is no longer at war with us and that we are His child (Rom 8:15).
God wants to give you His peace and I want to encourage you to know His peace in your life.
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. John 14:27
